SETANTA CONTRACT
Setanta have a contract that allows them to show 38 LIVE SPL games this season on Sundays.
The SPL have laid down rules which stop them from showing only Rangers or Celtic games.
Setanta is required to inform the SPL of their fixture selections 4 weeks in advance.
In practical terms they try and do this further ahead, but it is not always possible
when CL and UEFA draws can alter the SPL schedule.
As far as the Saturday games are concerned, the selection is made by STV.
This is based on an editorial decision and will depend on which match they wish to
have extended coverage of on their Monday night programme.
Again, these should be selected 4 weeks in advance. In practice they will normally follow
the Old Firm team who is not playing in the Setanta Live match, although this is not guaranteed.
SIGNAL QUALITY ISSUES ON DIGITAL SYSTEM
With digital systems, checkering or sparklies can result from several sources.
(1) Static Buildup in the decoder/receiver can cause a lot of sparklies.
The good news is that simply shutting off the machine and turning it on again fixes it.
Simply changing channel for a second often works also. Repeat this if it recurrs during the game.
Those of you with chipped C-band boards in the past will be familiar with this problem.
(2) Heavy Rain is very bad for Ku signals. We had a couple of games last year when a
lot of clubs had a bit of severe sparklies due to rain interfering with the uplink to the
transatlantic sat in London. Loses for isolated clubs can be from heavy local rain.
(3) Poor overall signal quality. Fine tuning dish focus will correct this for most.
For clubs on the coasts of North America who are getting to the edge of the sat footprint,
bigger dishes may be needed. If your overall quality is low, consult with Terry at 1-888-setanta
for advice before buying a bigger dish.
Bad connectors, poor quality coax cable and failing LNB's can also cause signal strength loss.
DIGITAL RECEIVER SYSTEM
The first Rangers match on the new system was Wed-26-Nov 2003 Stuttgart v Rangers.
We will still have to use our big dishes, analog receivers and Setanta analog decoders for some games
This may occur when digital transmission conditions are poor (eg heavy rains)or on days when Setanta
are doing a bunch of other games such as English Premiership, rugby and Irish games (such as hurling
and gaelic football).
They tell me that the SPL games will have priority on their digital channels but that there is still
a lot more space available on C-band that T5 digital. Due to this, need for a C-band system
is most likely to occur when Rangers and Celtic are playing other teams simultaneously in the SPL.
Tech Requirements - ( 3 feet ) digital fixed with stays ( 2 support braces for arm stablization )
0.3 db noise Ku LNB
You need a clear vision line to T5 which you can assess using your big dish and receiver.
For those of you who do not have T5 programmed, it sits 4 degrees west of T6 at 97 degrees West Longtitude.
